Hokies defeat Longwood
Tech claims its second 7-0 on the day

BLACKSBURG, Va. After defeating Elon earlier in the day, the 60th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team posted a 7-0 win over Longwood at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va., to sweep the day’s events and giving Tech a 2-0 record to start the 2009 season.

The Hokies opened by winning three straight doubles matches, for the second time today, while only losing two points (8-0, 8-0, 8-2), followed by winning all six singles matches.

Senior Abbey Walker played in the No. 6 match and dominated Longwood’s Eileen Sullivan, 6-0, 6-0 to open the scoring for Tech. In match No. 5, Hokie freshman Courtney Rauscher defeated Lancer sophomore Nasim Moadab, 6-1, 6-1 to score the third point for Tech. The Hokies clinched the contest when sophomore Holly Johnson beat Longwood freshman Jackie Esguerra, 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Jessica Brouwer tallied her second win of the day, defeating Longwood sophomore Zsofia Jakeb 6-1, 6-1, while freshman Katie Blow, who also won her first contest of 2009, beat Lancer senior Ashley Melson, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Inga Beermann, who is ranked #125, closed out the day’s action, claiming a win, 6-2, 6-2, over Longwood junior Laura Simon.

Tech dominated the doubles competition, winning all three contests. The Hokie team of Rauscher/Betts defeated Moadab/Sullivan of Longwood, 8-0. Soon after, Tech clinched the first point of the match when Hamza/Walker beat the Lancers team of Esguerra/Melson, 8-0. The Hokie team of Beermann/Blakely finished the Lancers off defeating Simon/Jakab, 8-2.
