The Hokies, ranked No. 60 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, opened by winning three straight doubles matches with a score of 8-2 in all three contests. After taking the doubles point, the Hokies reeled of five straight wins to sweep the days events.
Freshman Shannon Betts got things started, defeating Elon freshman Sally Wilkey 6-2, 6-1, while fellow freshman Martha Blakely posted her first win of the season over Phoenix junior Paige Kensrve 6-3, 6-0. The clinching point came in the No. 1 singles match when senior Jessica Brouwer registered a victory over junior Anna Milian, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman Courtney Rauscher won 7-6, 6-2 over Elon sophomore Melissa Wolf, in match No. 4, while sophomore Yasmin Hamza defeated Phoenix Elisa Simonetti in a close contest, 6-4, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) to close out the singles competition. Katie Blow, the fourth freshman to compete in singles action, won 6-3, 6-4 over Elon freshman Daleen Kloppers.
In doubles action, Betts/Blow defeated Wilkey/Butcher, 8-2, while the Hokies clinched the first point when Walker/Blakely won 8-2 in the No. 2 match over Simonetti/Kloppers. Tech completed the doubles sweep with another 8-2 victory when Brouwer/Johnson beat Milian/Kensrve.
