Tech has perfect day at Hokie Fall Invitational
Hokies win all 15 matches

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech put on a frightening performance on the first day of the 15th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational. The Hokies won a combined 15 singles and doubles matches without the loss a single set. The tournament features 82 players from 13 teams and is being held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Play begins at 8 a.m. daily and admission is free.

The event features players from Appalachian State, Albany, Chattanooga, Davidson, East Carolina. East Tennessee State, Liberty, Marshall, Murray State, Radford, Virginia, Wofford and Virginia Tech. The tournament includes participants from 20 countries around the globe.

In Flight A singles, Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, The Netherlands) defeated Jessica Cook (East Carolina) 6-1, 6-3, while Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) rolled 6-1, 6-1, against Emily Hangstefer (Chattanooga). Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), ranked No. 110 nationally, disposed of Sonia Arnand (Wofford), 6-0, 6-1, in Flight B and Katie Blow (Fr., Richmond, Va.) cruised past Ivana Tomaic (Radford), 6-3, 6-2, in the same bracket.

Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) opened her Flight C competition with a solid 6-3, 6-1, win over Alexis Webb (Murray State) and Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) defeated Susan Ma (Albany), 6-3, 6-1,in the same bracket. Shannon Betts (Fr., Newnan, Ga.) was the lone Tech player in Flight D and took a, 6-0, 6-2, decision from Katharine Dicconson (Davidson). In Flight E, Abbey Walker (Sr., Lancaster, S.C.) blanked Jessica Ratcliff (East Tennessee State), 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, Brouwer/Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) won two Flight A doubles match defeating Rocio Cabinellas/Natalie Collins (East Carolina), 8-1, and Catherine Kellner/Isabell Raich (Marshall), 8-2. Beermann/Blakely received a first round bye and took a 8-3 decision over Tara Byrne/Karina Kedzo (East Tennessee State).

Hamza/Rauscher picked up an 8-5 win over Stephanie Brown/Hannah Frick (Liberty) in Flight B, then Walker teamed with Rauscher to edge Annie Green/Beata Knizat (Chattanooga), 8-6.. Betts/Blow defeated Adriana Alvarez/Lyndsay Ottosen (Murray State), 8-0, in the same bracket before advancing into the semifinals with a 8-4 win against Mirna Matic/Ivana Tomaic (Radford).

The Hokie Fall Invitational continues through Sunday.
