Hokies eliminated at Wilson/ITA East Regional
Brouwer/Johnson drop quarterfinal match

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Virginia Tech’s remaining women’s tennis players were eliminated Monday morning at the Wilson/ITA East Regional tournament. The event was played at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on the University of Pennsylvania campus.

The Tech duo of Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, Netherlands)/Holly Johnson (So., Tallahassee, Fla) advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win on Sunday over Clark/Kim (Yale), but were eliminated Monday morning, 8-6, by Bartlett/Marable (Princeton).

In singles, Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salfluzen, Germany) easily won her second round match Sunday, 6-1, 6-0, over Petra Santini (Boston U.), but was eliminated in the third round, 6-2, 6-4, by Lauren Cash (Boston College). Johnson won her first round match against Sarah Meyer (Sienna), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, then was eliminated by No. 7 seed Bianca Aboubakare (Brown), 6-2, 7-6 (4).

In other Sunday singles results, Brouwer lost her second round match to the tournament’s top seed and 42nd-ranked nationally, Kellie Schmitt (Marshall), 6-2, 6-2. Martha Blakely (Fr., Reading, Pa.) also dropped a second round contest losing, 6-1, 6-2, against Emily Fraser (Virginia). Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), seeded No. 17 and ranked 110th nationally, lost a tough, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2, match versus Vicky Brook (Yale).


Tech concludes the fall portion of the schedule hosting the Hokie Fall Invitational, Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The event will be held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
