Blakely, Brouwer record wins at Wilson/ITA East Regional
Brouwer/Johnson take two doubles matches

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Martha Blakely and Jessica Brouwer each won singles matches Saturday to advance at the Wilson/ITA East Region Championships. Tech’s doubles team of Brouwer/Holly Johnson won two matches and moved on in the main draw.

The event features players from 60 schools in the region competing to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships next month in Charlottesville, Va. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the regional will automatically qualify for the national championship. The East Regional, scheduled to continue through Oct. 28, is being played at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Blakely (Reading, Pa.), winner of two qualifying matches Friday, defeated Nadia Demidenkco (George Washington), 6-2, 6-3, and will face Emily Fraser (Virginia) on Sunday. Jessica Brouwer (Sr., Maarssen, Netherlands) cruised past Paila Rodolfi (Stonybrook), 6-2, 6-1, and will play Kellie Schmidt (Marshall) in the next round. Results were not available for Holly Johnson’s (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) match against Sarah Mayer (Siena).

Inga Beermann (Sr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), seeded No. 11 and Yasmin Hamza (So., Cairo, Egypt), ranked No. 110 nationally and seeded No. 17, received byes and will not see their first action until Sunday.

In doubles, Brouwer/Johnson defeated Docci/? (New Jersey Tech), 8-4, then eased past Makarova/Zilberman (Columbia), 8-4. Beermann/Blakely defeated Campitiello/LoRusso (Connecticut), 8-4, but were eliminated, 8-5, by Fraser/Stevens (Virginia).

The tournament schedule for Sunday includes a single round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
