Blow, Rauscher take Sergio Tecchini titles
Tech freshmen win respective divsions

NORFOLK, Va. --- Two Virginia Tech freshmen completed a very successful weekend by taking their respective singles divisions at the Sergio Tacchini Collegiate Invitational. The three-day event was played at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center and at the Old Dominion University outdoor tennis complex.

Katie Blow (Fr., Richmond, Va.) easily won her B-1 division semifinal, 6-0, 6-1, over Jo Jo Gruber (Delaware), before battling her way to a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (10-7), victory in the championship match against Monika Mical (Penn State). Super tiebreakers were utilized in lieu of third sets throughout the tournament.

Courtney Rauscher (Fr., Evans, Ga.) completed her domination of the C-2 division defeating Ally Harding (Villanova), 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinal and cruising past Leyla Moizan (Penn State), 6-2, 6-3, in the final. Rauscher lost only nine games in four matches on her way to the title.

Shannon Betts (Fr., Newnan, Ga.) lost her B-3 singles semifinal Sunday morning, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (10-8), to Denisa Zobeideh (Penn State).

The Tech threesome, who won two doubles titles on Friday, won 16 of 17 singles and doubles combined matches.

The Hokies return to action Oct. 24-28, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional.
