Hokies finish tied for third at Moon Golf Invitational

Final Results
The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a three-round total of 17-over 881 and tied Chattanooga for third place at the Moon Golf Invitational on Tuesday. The two-day tournament was played at the par 72, 6,309-yard Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Florida.
Tech posted 6-over 294 in each on Monday’s two rounds. The Hokies improved one stroke to post a 293 in the final round on Tuesday. Three Tech players finished in the top 15. This is the team’s first tournament of the spring.
Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, led the Hokies. She tied for fifth at 1-over 217, six strokes behind medalist Alice Chen of Furman. Mahar shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, a round that saw four birdies and an eagle-3 at the par 5, 472-yard first hole. The 69 was Tech’s lowest round of the tournament. Mahar’s fifth place finish is the best of her young career and the team’s second-best individual finish of the 2017-18 season to date.
Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, tied for eighth place at 218 and Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 15th at 220. Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 33rd place at 226 and Allison Woodward, a redshirt junior from Unicoi, Tennessee, tied for 59th place at 236.
Ninth-ranked Furman took the team title with a 1-under 863, 17 strokes ahead of Old Dominion and 18 strokes ahead of the Hokies and Mocs. Augusta and Memphis tied for fifth at 882, host Louisville was seventh at 888. Maryland was eighth at 893 and Kennesaw State was ninth at 897. Michigan was 10th at 910, Southern Mississippi was 11th at 920, South Florida was 12th at 927 and Rutgers was 13th at 935.
The Hokies return to the Sunshine State in early March to once again compete in the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami. The three-day event will be played March 5-7 at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.
