Hokies finish 14th at UNC

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a three round total of 882 and finished in 14th place at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Hokies, who shot a 304 in Friday’s first round, rebounded to shot a 1-under 287 in Saturday’s second round. Tech’s 17-stroke improvement was, by far, the best improvement of any team in the field on Saturday. Tech carded a 291 on Sunday for the 882 total. The Hokies were under par in each of the last two rounds of the tournament.

Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, led the Hokies. She had with a 3-over 219 and finished tied for 43rd place individually. She finished 15 strokes behind medalist Leona Maguire of Duke.

Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 51st place at 22 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 55th at 223. Anne Taylor Hough, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina tied for 63rd at 225 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, tied for 75th at 228. Three Hokies were par-or-better in Sunday’s final round.

Duke won the team title with a 31-under 833, one stroke ahead of Alabama and 13 strokes ahead of South Carolina. Arkansas, host North Carolina, Wake Forest, NC State, Louisville, Virginia and a tie with Vanderbilt and Michigan State rounded out the top 10. Michigan was 12th at 875 and Ohio State was 13th at 876, six strokes ahead of the Hokies. Tulane was 15th at 889, Rollins was 16th at 894, UNC Wilmington was 17th at 903 and Iowa was 18th at 908.

The Hokies return to action this coming weekend, as they close out the fall portion of the season at the Cardinal Cup on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event is played at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
