Hokies improve to 14th entering final round at UNC

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team has a two round total of 591 and moved up into 14th place at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Hokies, who shot a 304 in Friday’s first round, rebounded to shot a 1-under 287 in Saturday’s second round. Tech’s 17-stroke improvement was, by far, the best improvement of any team in the field on Saturday.
Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, leads the Hokies with a 2-over 146 and is tied for 40th place. She trails leader Leona Maguire by 11 strokes.
Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 54th place at 148 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, is tied for 58th at 149. Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 65th place at 150 and Anne Taylor Hough, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, is tied for 81st at 154. Bose had the Hokies’ best round of Saturday, with a 2-under 70.
Duke holds the second round lead at 22-under 554, 10 strokes ahead of Alabama and 11 strokes ahead of South Carolina, Arkansas, NC State, host North Carolina, Louisville, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Michigan State round out the top 10. Virginia is 11th at 581, Vanderbilt is 12th at 582 and Michigan is 13th at 586, five strokes ahead of the Hokies and eight strokes ahead of Tulane. Iowa is 16th at 596, Rollins is 17th at 601 and UNC Wilmington is 18th at 604.
