Hokies tie for sixth at Furman

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a three-round total of 884 and tied Augusta for sixth place at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Sunday. The three-day event, hosted by Furman, was played at the par 72, 6,278-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Tech opened the tournament with a 288 on Friday and followed that with a 299 on Saturday. The Hokies improved by two strokes with a 297 in Sunday’s final round.

Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, carded a 3-over 219 and tied for 12^th place individually. She finished 14 strokes behind medalist Jiwon Jeon of Daytona State.

Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 16^th place at 220 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 26^th at 223. Anne Taylor Hough, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, tied for 37^th at 224 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, tied for 40^th at 225.

Host Furman shot an 8-under 280 in the final round and claimed the team title. They shot an 857 and finished 10 strokes ahead of Daytona State and 17 strokes ahead of Kennesaw State. Middle Tennessee State was fourth at 875 and Memphis was fifth at 879, five strokes ahead of the Hokies and Jaguars. UNC Wilmington was eighth at 890, Southern Mississippi was ninth at 893 and Chattanooga was 10^th at 895. ETSU, Ole Miss, JMU, Georgia State, LSU, Georgia Southern and Western Carolina rounded out the 17-team field.

Tech returns to action on Oct. 13-15, as they travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to compete in the Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
