Hokies off to strong start at Furman
Tech second, Elizabeth Bose tied for second

The Virginia Tech women’s golf team is in second place following the opening round at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Friday. The three-day event, hosted by Furman, is being played at the par 72, 6,278-yard Furman University Golf Course.
The Hokies posted a first round even-par 288 and trail Daytona State by four strokes. Tech leads among the 16 four-year schools in tournament. Daytona State, a junior college from Daytona, Florida, has won nine of the last 13 junior college national championships.
Elizabeth Bose shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for second place individually. She and three other golfers are six strokes behind leader Jiwon Jeon of Daytona State. Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, had five birdies and two bogeys on Friday.
Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for sixth place at 1-under 71 and Anne Taylor Hough, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, is tied for 14th at 73. Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, is tied for 18th place at 74 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, is tied for 23rd at 75. No Hokies shot worse than bogey on any hole in the first round and all five are in the top 25, individually.
After the Falcons and Hokies, host Furman is third at 293, Middle Tennessee State is fourth at 295, ETSU, Kennesaw State and UNC Wilmington are tied for fifth at 298 and Memphis is eighth at 300, Chattanooga and Augusta are tied for ninth at 303, Southern Mississippi is 11th at 304 and Georgia State is 12th at 307. James Madison, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia Southern and Western Carolina are 13th-17th.
The second round will be played Saturday morning. The Hokies will begin at 9 a.m. from the first tee and will be grouped with Daytona State and Furman. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from BirdieFire.com.
