Hokies finish seventh at Minnesota Invitational

Final Results
The Virginia Tech women’s golf team opened the season with a seventh place finish at the Minnesota Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by the University of Minnesota, was played at the par 72, 6,248-yard Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minnesota.
The Hokies posted a three-round total of 8-under 856. Tech carded a final round of 4-under 284 on Tuesday, the fourth-best round of the day. All three rounds for Tech were under par.
Elizabeth Bose shot a three-round total of 8-under 208 and tied for third place. Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia and Robynn Ree of Southern California finished two strokes behind co-medalists Muni He of Southern California and Inez Wannamarta of Purdue. Bose’s third place finish ties for her career best and ties for the best finish ever for a Virginia Tech women’s golfer.
Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, making her collegiate debut, tied for 14th place at 4-under 212. Her final round 69 was Tech’s best individual round of the day. Her day was highlighted by an eagle 3 on the par 5 ninth hole.
Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 39th place at 220. She carded an eagle 2 on the par 4 eighth hole. Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 50th at 223 and Anne Taylor Hough, a junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, tied for 62nd at 226.
Southern California won the team title with a 26-under 238, nine strokes better than Michigan State and 16 strokes better than Notre Dame and Purdue. Wisconsin and Louisville tied for fifth at 855, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. East Carolina finished eighth at 860, host Minnesota was ninth at 871, Kansas State was 10th at 872 and BYU was 11th at 876. Georgia was 12th at 882, North Texas was 13th at 893 and Kansas was 14th at 894.
Seven of the 14 teams in the event made the NCAA field last season, including three that advanced to match play. USC was a semifinalist. In the Minnesota Invitational, Virginia Tech defeated three of the teams that made last season’s NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies return to action Sept. 22-24 at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina.
