Jessica Spicer falls in semis of Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship

Three Hokies advanced to match play

Virginia Tech women’s golfer Jessica Spicer advanced to the semifinals of the Championship Division of the 20th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship on Thursday, before falling to eventual champion Hailey Cleary in 22 holes. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,085-yard Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Jessica Spicer, a rising sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, was the fourth seed in match play. She won her first three matches, 8&7 over Brooke Hutto, 1 up over Madison Corley and 7&6 over Hannah Craver. In the semifinal match, the match went to four extra holes before Cleary prevailed. The pair battled throughout the day, with neither player going more than 2-up. Cleary would go on and win the title 2&1 over Mary Chandler Bryan.

Spicer was joined in match play by teammates Anne Taylor Hough, a rising junior from Spartanburg, South Carolina, who tied Spicer for third in the stroke play qualifier on Tuesday and Spicer’s twin sister, Sarah, who was the 21^st seed in match play. Hough, the third seed in match play, won two matches and advanced to the quarterfinal round and Sarah Spicer, won her first match.
