Four Virginia Tech women’s golfers competed in the 61st Virginias/Carolinas Matches, played this week. The prestigious three-day event was played at Spring Creek Golf Club in Zion Crossroads, Virginia. The Virginias won the matches, 81-63.

Amanda Hollandsworth, a rising junior from Floyd, Virginia and Elizabeth Bose, a rising junior from Norfolk, Virginia, competed for the victorious Virginias squad. Mary-Katelyn Holanek, a graduate student from Cary, North Carolina, who completed her Virginia Tech career in the spring and Jessica Spicer, a rising sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, competed for the Carolinas team.

The victory, the Virginias first since 2009, halted a seven-year losing streak. Hollandsworth won her Wednesday singles match and Holanek halved her match. In a meeting of Hokies, Spicer defeated Bose, 2 & 1.

There were 72 points up for grabs in the singles on Wednesday. Hollandsworth, the 2017 VSGA Women’s Stroke Play champion, swept her Wednesday singles match for three points and Spicer won the front nine and match for two of the three awarded points. On Tuesday, Tech golfers won 9.5 of a possible 12 points in the Modified Pinehurst Alternate Shot match.
