Hokies tie for ninth at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a three-round total of 48-over par 912 and tied Charleston Southern and Delaware for ninth place at the UNF Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The 54-hole, two-day event was played at the 6,002-yard, par 72 Jacksonville Golf and Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
Tech shot 309 in Monday’s morning round and improved 10 strokes in the afternoon. Tech’s 299 was tied for the fourth-best round of the afternoon session. The Hokies finished with a 304 on Tuesday.
Whitney Stevenson, a senior from Canton, Georgia, led the Hokies with a 5-over 221 and tied for sixth place. She finished eight strokes behind medalist Sana Tufail of ODU. This marks Stevenson’s best finish of the season and first top 10 finish.
Elizabeth Bose, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia tied for 33rd at 229 and Jessica Spicer, a freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 39th at 231. Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt sophomore from Floyd, Virginia, tied for 54th at 236 and Allison Woodward, a redshirt sophomore from Unicoi, Tennessee, tied for 67th at 240.
Anne Taylor Hough, sophomore from Spartanburg, South Carolina, played the tournament as an individual and tied for 74th place at 242.
Southern Mississippi won the team title on a scorecard match over Memphis. The two teams tied at 31-over 895, one stroke ahead of ODU and Daytona State. Campbell finished fifth at 898, College of Charleston was sixth at 903, Mercer was seventh at 909 and Eastern Kentucky was eighth at 910, two strokes better than the Hokies, Bucs and Blue Hens. Murray State was 12th at 914, host North Florida was 13th at 926, Western Kentucky was 14th at 941, Western Carolina was 15th at 946 and Wofford was 16th at 960.
The Hokies conclude their swing through the state of Florida on Saturday and Sunday at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida.
