Hokies tie for 13th at Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a total of 40-over 904 and tied with Mercer for 13th place at the Hurricane Invitational on Wednesday. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,150-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Hokies, playing their first event of the spring season, shot a 297 on Monday and followed that with a 308 on Tuesday. Tech shot an 11-over 299 on Wednesday for the 904 total.
Allison Woodward, a redshirt sophomore from Unicoi, Tennessee, was the Hokies’ top finisher. She played the event as an individual and tied for 20th place, at 5-over 221. She shot her low round of the year on Tuesday, a three-under 69, which was tied for the third-best round of the tournament. Hannah Kim of Northwestern won medalist honors.
Elizabeth Bose, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, and Jessica Spicer, a freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 28th at 222. Spicer had the Hokies’ low round of the day, as she carded a 1-under 71, with three birdies and 13 pars. Spicer had a hole-in-one on the 142-yard, par 3 12th hole in Tuesday’s second round.
Whitney Stevenson, a senior from Canton, Georgia, tied for 39th place at 224 and Anne Taylor Hough, a sophomore from Spartanburg, South Carolina, finished 77th at 237. Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt sophomore from Floyd, Virginia, finished 77th at 238. Hough had the individual highlight of the day, as she eagled the 459-yard, par 5 18th hole.
Northwestern won the team title with a 5-under 859, seven strokes better than runner-up Michigan and 12 strokes better than Louisville. Host Miami was fourth at 877, Barry was fifth at 883, East Carolina was sixth at 886 and Penn State was seventh at 892. Middle Tennessee State finished eighth at 893, FIU was ninth at 894 and South Dakota State was 10th at 897. South Florida and Minnesota tied for 11th at 901, three strokes ahead of the Hokies and the Bears. Iowa State finished 15th.
The Hokies return to action up the Atlantic Coast on Monday. They will compete in the UNF Collegiate, host by North Florida at the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club.
