Hokies tied for eighth after first round at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a 9-over 297 and is tied with South Florida for eighth place after the first round of the Hurricane Invitational on Monday afternoon. The three-day event will be played at the par 72, 6,150-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Hokies, playing their first competitive round of the spring season, totaled 18 birdies among the five starters. The scoring was balanced on both the front and back nine today.
Whitney Stevenson, a senior from Canton, Georgia, leads the Hokies at 1-under 71 and is tied for seventh place individually. She carded five birdies and nine pars in her first round and trails leaders Tilda Larsson of Barry, Hannah Kim of Northwestern and Olivia Cason of Louisville by just two strokes.
Elizabeth Bose, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 20th at 73 and Jessica Spicer, a freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 34th at 75. Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt sophomore from Floyd, Virginia, is tied for 63rd at 78 and Anne Taylor Hough, a sophomore from Spartanburg, South Carolina, is tied for 73rd at 79.
Allison Woodward, a redshirt sophomore from Unicoi, Tennessee, is playing the event as an individual and tied with Spicer for 34th at 75. Woodward had the fourth-best score among the 11 players competing as individuals this week.
Louisville holds the day one lead with a score of 2-under 286, three strokes better than Northwestern and four strokes ahead of Michigan and the host Miami Hurricanes. Penn State is fifth at 291 and Division II power Barry and Minnesota are tied for sixth at 296, a stroke ahead of the Hokies and Bulls. Mercer is 10th at 300, Iowa State and FIU are tied for 11th at 301, Middle Tennessee State is 13th at 303, East Carolina is 14th at 305 and South Dakota State is 15th at 309.
The second round will be played on Tuesday. The Hokies will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. from the first tee and will be grouped with South Florida and Minnesota. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
