Hokies open spring slate at Miami

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Coming off solid performances in the final events of the fall season, the Virginia Tech women’s golf team will open the Spring 2017 portion of the schedule at the Hurricane Invitational on Feb. 27-March 1. The three-day event will be played at the par 71, 6,070-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.

The Hokies showed steady growth during the fall portion of the schedule, with a second place finish at UNCG and an eighth place finish at Louisville to complete the fall slate.

The Hokies will take the course in South Florida with Elizabeth Bose playing in the first position. The sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia led the Hokies in stroke average in the fall and had the second-best “Crunch Time” average. She finished third individually at UNCG in the fall and had a 15th place finish at Furman.

Anne Taylor Hough will play second. The sophomore from Spartanburg, South Carolina had a top 20 finish at UNCG and was fifth on the team in stroke average in the fall.

Amanda Hollandsworth will play third for Tech. The redshirt sophomore from Floyd, Virginia was second on the team in scoring average in the fall and led the team in “Crunch Time” scoring. She had two top 10 finishes in the fall, highlighted by a fourth place finish at Furman.

Whitney Stevenson will play in the fourth position in Miami. The senior from Canton, Georgia was fourth on the team in scoring in the fall and end the fall season on a strong note, finishing 16th at the Cardinal Cup in Louisville.

Jessica Spicer will play in the fifth position for the Hokies. The freshman from Bahama, North Carolina was third on the team in scoring in the fall and fourth in “Crunch Time” scoring. She finished 20th at ECU and had her best showing with an eighth place finish at UNCG.

Allison Woodward will play the event as an individual. The redshirt sophomore from Unicoi, Tennessee played in three fall events and had her best finish at UNCG, where she placed 31st.

Tech is one of three ACC schools in the 16-team event. The field is comprised of Augusta, Barry, East Carolina, FIU, Iowa State, Louisville, Mercer, Miami, Michigan, Middle Tennessee, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, South Dakota State, USF and the Hokies. The host Hurricanes are ranked 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and Northwestern is 16th. In all, seven of the teams are ranked in the top 50.

The Hokies will play a practice round on Sunday, before playing the first round on Monday. The second round will be played on Tuesday, with the final round completed on Wednesday. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
