Hokies ink Emily Mahar on signing day

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s golf coach Carol Robertson announced Thursday that Emily Mahar (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Preparatory) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Hokies for the 2017-18 season.

“We are so excited to welcome Emily to Hokie nation,” Robertson said. “It has been awesome recruiting her and learning more about the kind of person she is and how much she will contribute to our program.”

Mahar comes to Blacksburg from Arizona, where she competed for Lynn Winsor and Tui Selvaratham at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona. A two-time Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) Player of the Year, Mahar is rated the fourth-best golfer in Arizona for the class of 2017. She also is a four-time all-state first team selection and has helped her team clinch four consecutive state titles. As a program, the Gators’ have won a school-best 33 state championships.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Mahar also has played in two United States Golf Association (USGA) Girls’ Junior Qualifiers. Since December of 2015, Mahar has recorded 13 top-10 finishes in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and the JGAA, including four victories and three runner-up finishes.

The daughter of James and Katie Mahar, she intends to pursue a degree in sports medicine at Virginia Tech. Mahar is a four-year honor roll student at Xavier Prep and is currently a member of the National Honor Society.

The Hokies are in the midst of their second varsity season. Tech returns to action in February, as the team travels to Miami, Florida, for the Hurricane Invitational set for Feb. 27 – March 1.
