SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The Virginia Tech women’s golf team posted a 24-over 312 and is in eighth place at Cardinal Cup on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,393-yard University of Louisville Golf Club in suburban Simpsonville, Kentucky.
Four Hokies carded rounds of 6-over 78 in Sunday’s opening round. Whitney Stevenson, a senior from Canton, Georgia, Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt sophomore from Floyd, Virginia, Elizabeth Bose, a sophomore from Norfolk, Virginia and Jessica Spicer, a freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, are all among 11 players at 78, seven strokes off the lead of Jordan Chael of Kentucky and Bing Singhsumalee of Illinois.
Allison Woodward, a redshirt sophomore from Unicoi, Tennessee, is tied for 44th at 80. Mary-Katelyn Holanek, a senior from Cary, North Carolina, is playing the event as an individual and she is also tied for 44th at 80. All six competing Hokies are in the top half of the individual standings after the first round.
Seventh-ranked Florida State leads the tournament with a 13-over 301, one stroke ahead of Kentucky and two strokes ahead of Wisconsin. Illinois is fourth at 305, host and three-time defending champion Louisville is fifth at 306 and Cincinnati and East Carolina are tied for sixth at 311, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Maryland is ninth at 315 and Middle Tennessee State is 10th at 318. In all, 16 teams are competing in the event. Louisville has a “B” team entered, but is not eligible for team honors.
In all, six top 50 teams are competing at Louisville. The Hokies are second among unranked teams in the event. The second round will be played on Monday and the final round will be competed on Tuesday morning.
