BLACKSBURG, Va. – Off to a strong start in the program’s inaugural season, the Virginia Tech women’s golf team got even stronger on Wednesday when head coach Carol Robertson announced the signing of Kristin Hearp, Jessica Spicer and Sarah Spicer to a National Letters of Intent (NLI) on the final day of the early signing period.
"The 2016 signees have us really excited about what they can bring to this budding program,”said Robertson. “ We continue to work hard on setting both a solid foundation and culture. Jessica, Kristin and Sarah certainly have the characteristics to raise this team to a higher level on and off the golf course."
Kristin Hearp hails from nearby Roanoke, Virginia, where she attends Hidden Valley High School. She played on the Poindexter team for Virginia against Maryland for four years and spent three years on the VA/MD vs NC/SC team. In 2013, Hearp set the course and tournament record at Ole Monterey Golf Club, shooting a 62 on the first day of the Metro Invitational. She went on to win the Metro Invite in back-to-back years. She was the VSGA Junior Girls Champion in 2014 and Player of the Year in 2014, finishing runner up in 2015.
Hearp was a two-time captain at her high school and led her team to its first ever state championship in 2014, returning to finish second in 2015. A four-time member of the Roanoke Valley All-Metro golf team, Hearp was named the Timesland Player of the Year in 2015. Hearp has multiple tournament wins as part of her impressive resume, including the Junior Valentine and Roanoke Valley Women’s Hall of Fame. In addition to golf, Kristin has been very involved in Young Life, FCA, Latin Club, Environmental club, history club and is Chief Financial Officer of DECA at Hidden Valley High School. She is the daughter of Todd and Anne Hearp and has a twin sister, Caroline and two younger brothers, Gregory and Richard. Kristin is excited to be a third generation Hokie.
Natives of Durham, North Carolina, Jessica and Sarah Spicer bring a depth of expeience to the program. The pair began playing when they were seven years old and currently play with the men’s team at Northern Durham High School.
Jessica, a three-time member of the North Carolina first team All-State, qualified for the U.S. Girls Junior in both 2013 and 2015. The 2014 Carolinas Junior Champion was also named the Carolinas Player of the Year in the same year. Spicer was named to the high school All-Conference team in 2015.
Sarah, also a member of the 2015 All-Conference team, won the 2015 Durham Men’s High School Invitational championship, winning the North Carolina Women’s Amateur in the same year. A three-time member of the North Carolina first team All-State, Spicer qualified for the 2015 U.S. Girls Junior, advancing to match play rounds.
