Donovan, Hokies shine on Day One
Tech sits alone in sixth place after first day of competition

GREENVILLE, S.C. – One of just four players in the field of 96 to finish at one-over par in the first round, Virginia Tech freshman Nicolette Donovan fired a 73 on Sunday to help Virginia Tech finish in sole possession of sixth place on the first day of competition at the Lady Paladin Invitational.

Donovan’s team-low one-over 73 that included a one-under par 35 on the front nine. Four of her team-high five birdies on the day came on the front nine. The Ponte Vedra, Fla., product is tied for 12th place overall.

Donovan was backed up by fellow freshman Elizabeth Bose and redshirt freshmen Amanda Hollandsworth and Allison Woodward at three-over to round out the top Virginia Tech scores. Hollandsworth added four birdies of her own and Woodward notched three of her own.

Led by Donovan, the Hokies stand at eight shots out of the lead in the team’s first varsity competition. The Hokies will take the course starting at 9:36 on Monday for the second round, paired with Missouri and ACC foe North Carolina, with Anne Taylor Hough hitting the links first. Junior Whitney Stevenson, playing as an individual, will tee off at 10:57 a.m.
