Hokies set for Tennessee Relays

Tech will bring all five event groups to Knoxville

BLACKSBURG – Going to one meet for the second consecutive weekend, the Virginia Tech track and field teams will head west to Knoxville, Tennessee, competing at the Tennessee Relays from Friday-Saturday at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.

The two-day meet will be streamed live on the SEC Network +, available on your computer and phone via the WatchESPN app.

Fifteen schools will be in attendance, including 10 Power Five schools, and the quartet of Ronnie Baker, Christian Coleman, Justin Gatlin and Mike Rodgers will pursue the American record in the 4x100-meter relay.

Tech will be sending all of its five disciplines to the meet, after the distance and throws groups took last weekend off.

The Hokies remained in the same spot as last week’s United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 poll, staying at No. 13 on the men’s side and No. 18 on the women’s side, announced on Monday. Tech is the highest-ranked school on both sides out of the ACC.

Tech is coming off a successful meet at the VertKlasse Meeting on the campus of High Point last Friday. It turned in three first-place finishes in the sprints, as Ama-Selina Tchume won the 200- and 400-meter races and Shanel Burr took home the 100-meter hurdles. Additionally, it saw five other top-five finishes from Matthew Baker, Jaelyn Demory, Austin Kolko, Olivia Privitera and Deakin Volz.

The Hokies have nine student-athletes who have times and marks that rank across the nation in the top 25. Lisa Gunnarsson and Rachel Baxter rank first and 19^th in the pole vault, Stefanie Aeschlimann sits 14^th in the triple jump and throwers Emma Thor and Pavla Kuklova are 12^th and 14^th in the hammer throw.

On the men’s side, Greg Chiles owns the seventh-fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles, Deakin Volz and Torben Laidig sit eighth and 16^th in the pole vault and Marek Barta has the third-best throw in the discus.

Among ACC student-athletes, 27 times and marks from Tech rank inside the top 10 of the league.
