Burr, Tchume win sprint titles at VertKlassee Meeting

The seniors win the 200, 400 and 100 hurdles

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Ama-Selina Tchume earned two event titles and Shanel Burr got one, too, headlining Virginia Tech track and field at the VertKlasse Meeting on the campus of High Point on Friday.

Tchume, a senior, posted a time of 55.68 seconds in the 400 meters and a 24.15 time in the 200 meters, taking first in both races. Burr finished ninth in the 200, giving her two top-10 finishes on the day.

Burr clocked a season-best time in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.69 seconds to place first. It marked her first win during the outdoor season. The Georgia native won the 60-meter hurdles earlier in the year during the indoor season at the Roanoke Tune-Up.

“Selina had a tremendous day winning two events and posting season-best times,” sprints/hurdles coach Tim Vaught shared. “I was impressed with Shanel as well, both of them are trending in the right direction.”

In the 110-meter hurdles, Jaelyn Demory took fourth and Alex Davenport placed ninth. It was Demory’s first time running the event at the collegiate level, while Davenport improved his personal best in college by 0.5 seconds.

Following the hurdles, Matthew Baker finished ninth and Nathan Hogye placed 10^th in the 400 meters.

Baker, a sophomore, ran a personal best in the 200 meters, posting a personal-record time of 21.64 to place second, while Nathan Hogye ran a PR as well. Austin Kolko placed third in the 400-meter hurdles, his first top-three finish since April 21, 2017, at the War Eagle Invitational on Auburn’s campus.

“Matthew Baker cracked sub-22 for the first time in his career today,” Vaught said. “I can’t wait to see what he does next weekend in Knoxville.”

Demory, a redshirt freshman, competed in the long jump as well, placing 11^th.

In the pole vault, Deakin Volz placed second with a mark of 5.36 meters (17 feet, 7 inches), while Olivia Privitera vaulted a height of 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches) to place fourth.

The Hokies will compete next at the Tennessee Relays from April 12-14 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
