Chiles, Reinhart shine at Texas, Florida Relays

Pair begins three-day meets for Hokies

Greg Chiles and Matthew Reinhart were the lone Hokies competing Thursday night, and the pair did not disappoint at the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.

Chiles clocked a time of 50.97 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, finishing in third place to qualify for the finals on Friday. The senior will run at 8:05 p.m. ET against eight other athletes.

“It was great to see Greg start with his best opener in the 400 hurdles, going sub-51,” sprints/hurdles coach Tim Vaught commented. “He’s well ahead of pace compared to last year.

“It was a good day overall, we both were pretty excited after seeing the time. He’ll have to clean up some things in the second part of the race, but those fixes should make him set for tomorrow night.”

On the campus of Florida in Gainesville, Reinhart set a personal record in the javelin, tossing a mark of 62.00 meters (203 feet, 5 inches) to place ninth. The Pennsylvania native topped his previous best mark from last weekend by more than eight feet.

“Always good to come out and get a new PR,” throws coach Andrew Dubs mentioned. “I thought he held his composure much better this week.

“He put together a few nice technical aspects, and having the next two weekends off will be good to really get back to some solid training. But overall, really happy for Matt on the PR and the progress he continues to make.”

Tech will have four of its disciplines competing tomorrow at the two meets, while the distance group will go at it at the Raleigh Relays on NC State’s campus. All three meets will be streamed live: Texas Relays (Longhorn Network), Raleigh Relays (ACC Network Extra) and Florida Relays (SEC Network +).
