McKiver qualifies for USATF Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech track and field athlete Nora McKiver has qualified for the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 3-5.

McKiver, a senior from High Point, North Carolina, qualified in the 60-meter hurdles this past weekend at the Hokie Invitational held at Rector Field House after running the event in a personal-best time of 8.39 seconds. She came in second place, just a hundredth of a second behind Florida’s Timetria Mitchell.

“Getting her to the indoor championships was one of our goals,” Tech sprints/hurdles coach Tim Vaught said. “She’s redshirting this indoor season, so she won’t be competing for us at the ACC meet, but we wanted her to qualify for the USA indoors. She’s worked really hard to do that.”

McKiver, who previous best in the 60-meter hurdles was 8.45 seconds, ran unattached in the meet because she is taking a redshirt season during the Hokies’ indoor campaign. She took a redshirt season because of an injury during Tech’s outdoor season last spring, so she’ll have both indoor and outdoor eligibility in 2018 as a fifth-year senior.

A year ago at the 2016 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, McKiver earned second-team All-ACC honors in both the 200 and the 400.

The preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles at the USATF Indoor Championships will be held on Saturday, March 4, with the semifinals and finals being held Sunday, March 5.
