Curtin, Green set for U.S. Olympic Team Trials
Tech duo will compete in respective events in hopes of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic squad

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech runners Thomas Curtin and Hanna Green are set to begin competition at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which start Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The two three finishers in each event will represent the United States at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this summer.

Green will be attempting to make the U.S. Olympic team in her specialty – the 800-meter run. The Latrobe, Pennsylvania product begins that quest Friday evening at 7:45 p.m. (EST) with a preliminary round. The top two in each of the five heats and the next six fastest times advance to the next round.

Green must advance out of two preliminary rounds – the second one is Saturday at 2:43 p.m. (EST) – to qualify for the finals, which will be held at 8:42 p.m. (EST) on Monday.

Green qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by virtue of her school-record time of 2 minutes, 1.17 seconds at the 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she won the bronze medal.

Curtin, a Leesburg, Virginia product who just concluded his Tech career, begins competition Monday with a preliminary round of qualifying in the 5,000-meter run. That round starts at 8:02 p.m. (EST). The top 16 fastest times advance to the finals, which will be held at 8:20 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, July 9.

Curtin qualified for the Trials by virtue of his fourth-place finish in the 5,000 at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He ran the event in a school-record time of 13:27.64.

Curtin guided the Hokies to the ACC outdoor championship by winning both the 5,000 and the 10,000 at the league’s meet. He also helped the program to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA meet.
