MIAMI - Freshmen Teagan Rasche and Pavla Kuklova led the Hokies track & field on day one of the Hurricane Invite with first place honors in their collegiate debuts. Virginia Tech’s four high jumpers wrapped up competition with top-10 on Friday afternoon.

Rasche led off for the Hokies with a first place mark in the javelin in a field of 15. The freshman reached the 47.16-meter (154-09) distance on her first throw of the day to rank fifth in program history.

Kuklova continued Tech’s success with a 58.46-meter (191-09) hammer throw. The Czech Republic native reached the first place distance on her final throw, passing up Miami’s Precious Ogunleye to take the crown.

The Hokies’ rounded out the first day with the high jump led by Emily Miller’s fifth place result on the women’s side. Miller made her outdoor collegiate debut with a 1.60-meter (5-3) clearance.

Tech’s men wrapped up day one with five top-10 finishes in the high jump. Ryan Shepard led the group with a personal best, 1.95-meter (6-4.75) height to place fifth. In his collegiate debut, James Carver met the same clearance on his third attempt, placing sixth. Mackenzie Muldoon rounded out the group in ninth with a 1.85-meter (6-0.75) mark.

The Hokies sprinters, in addition to the triple jump and discus events, begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
