Tech to host Doc Hale Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech track & field team will host the Virginia Tech “Doc Hale” Elite Meet in Rector Fieldhouse this weekend, beginning on Thursday until Saturday.

The meet begins on Thursday with the first four events of the heptathlon at noon. The heptathlon will conclude on Friday at 11:45 a.m. following the start of the pentathlon at 11 a.m. Both Friday’s track and field events begin at 5 p.m. Women’s high jump and pole vault start the field events on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the track portion at 1 p.m.

Several Atlantic Coast Conference schools will be competing this weekend including Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wake Forest. Five non-conference teams join the field: Florida, Georgia, East Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The Hokies competed at three different meets last weekend. Reigning ACC Field Performer of the Week Torben Laidig led Tech’s pole vaulters at the Penn State National Invitational with a record-setting 5.56 meter (18-3) mark. The redshirt sophomore leads the nation with this mark, also placing first in Hokie program history and in the ACC record book.

At the Bob Pollock Invite, Nora McKiver led the sprinters with another strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles, placing second overall and first of the collegians in a personal best time of 8.45.

Tech’s distance runners wrapped up last weekend at the JDL Camel City Invite, winning the distance medley relay 9:43.06 and 11:33.13 for the men’s and women’s teams, respectively.

The Hokies compete next weekend at the Samford Invitational and Iowa State Classic on February 12 and 13.
