Sediva wins bronze medal at World University Games
The Czech Republic native, who won the national title back in June, sets a school and ACC record en route to claiming third

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech track athlete Irena Sediva finished in third place in the javelin throw Sunday at the World University Games being held in Gwangju, South Korea.

Sediva, a rising junior from the Czech Republic, came in third with a toss of 196 feet, 5.8 inches (59.89 meters), which came on the first of her six attempts. She broke her own school and ACC record of 192 feet, 9 inches that she set when she won the national championship at the 2015 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, in mid-June.

Tats Khaladovich of Belarus won the event at the World University Games with a toss of 198 feet, 3.9 inches (60.45 meters). Latvia’s Lina Muze finished in second with a throw of 197 feet, 8.4 inches (60.26 meters).

Sediva was named the ACC’s Field Performer of the Year on June 19. In her first year of collegiate competition, she won every meet in which she competed, including the NCAA title in which she claimed Tech’s 15th individual national crown as a school.

Also, another Tech track athlete, Tomas Kruzliak, competed at the World University Games in the hammer throw, and he finished in ninth place. His best throw was 226 feet, 7.2 inches (69.05 meters), though he did not qualify for the finals in the event, as only the top eight after three throws qualified.

Kruzliak finished in fourth place in the hammer throw at the 2015 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships held in Eugene.
