CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The field events took center stage as the Hokies closed out the 2015 Virginia Challenge hosted by the University of Virginia on Saturday evening.

Manuel Ziegler soared in the men’s long jump, claiming the victory with an impressive jump of 25’10.25” (7.88m). His jump currently ranks second in the nation and first in the ACC. Ziegler’s mark is second in Virginia Tech history only behind Jeff Artis-Gray.

The men’s hammer throw ended up with Tomas Kruzliak taking second place. On his second attempt, Kruzliak used a heave of 216’2” (65.89m). Kruzliak’s mark currently ranks in a tie for 15th in the nation.

Jaka Muhar took the men’s javelin throw with ease hitting a mark of 229’11” (70.08m) on his fifth attempt. His throw was a personal best and currently ranks 20th in the nation and third in the Virginia Tech record books.

On her sixth and final attempt, Sabine Kopplin used a season-best throw of 167’7” (51.09m) to claim second place in the women’s javelin throw. Kopplin was the highest collegiate finisher in the event. Her throw ranks 11th in the nation so far this weekend.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Prince Owusu, Martin Dally, Dante Price and Kevin DeWillie finished in ninth place with a time of 3:15.19.

Amanda Smith finished the women’s 1500-meter race with a time of 4:17.84, earning her the 10th-place finish.

That concludes the Hokies’ stay at the Virginia Challenge. Tech will be back in action next weekend at the Penn Relays and the Radford Relays.
