GAINESVILLE, Fla. - For the second straight week, Irena Sediva crushed the school record in the women’s javelin throw but this time she shattered a 17-year old ACC record and separated herself as one of the nation’s elite at the Florida Relays on Friday evening.
Sediva’s heave of 190’04” (58.02m) was enough to win the competition and best her school record set at the Texas Relays last weekend. With that throw, Sediva separated herself further from the rest of the nation. If it stands at the conclusion of all meets this weekend, Sediva will lead the NCAA in the event. In addition, Sediva set the ACC record in the event, surpassing Ann Crouse of Virginia's mark of 188'3" (57.38m) set in 1998. The Czech Republic native ranks 10th all time in the NCAA’s history of the event according to USTFCCCA records.
Also competing in the javelin at the Florida Relays was Sabine Kopplin who finished in fourth place overall. Kopplin’s throw was for 162’04” (49.47m).
In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Shanel Burr finished in 21st place in a field of 66 competitors with a time of 13.61 seconds, moving her to fifth all time in the Hokie record books.
The men’s discus throw saw Jordan Roach finish in sixth place overall. On his second throw, Roach hit a mark of 166’05” (50.72m).
The Hokies will be back in action tomorrow at the Florida Relays. In addition, the Tech pole vaulters will be competing at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University.
