Sprinters kick off outdoor season with quality finishes at Hurricane Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. ­- The Virginia Tech track & field team kicked off the 2015 outdoor season with some solid finishes at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami on Saturday evening

For the men, Dante Price and Darius Watkins finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively, in the men’s 100-meter dash. Price posted a time of 10.69 seconds while Watkins finished with a time of 10.70 seconds.

Price followed that with a second-place finish in the 200 crossing the line at 21.13 seconds while Watkins finished in seventh with a time of 21.73 seconds.

Chet Hebden finished in 10th in the 400 with a time of 48.93 seconds.

Aaron Simpson (4th, 15.40 seconds), Alexander Merritt (7th, 15.99 seconds) and Austin Kolko (9th, 16.06 seconds) finished in the top 10 in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles.

Kolko and Merritt followed that up with a pair of top-10 finishes in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Kolko finished in sixth place with a time of 55.77 seconds while Merritt came in at 57.97 seconds.

On the women’s side, Courtney Blanden posted a sixth-place finish in the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 12.11 seconds. She followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 24.83 seconds.

Nora McKiver and Shanel Burr finished in fifth and seventh places, respectively, in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. McKiver crossed the finish line with a time of 14.11 seconds while Burr finished with a time of 14.21 seconds.

Christine London finished in seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.93.

Tech will be back in action next weekend at the Raleigh Relays and the Texas Relays.
