GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time this season, Virginia Tech distance runner Thomas Curtin was named the ACC Track Performer of the Week as announced by the ACC on Tuesday afternoon.
Curtin set a new school record and continued his dominance in distance events by finishing in first place in the men's 5000-meter race at the Iowa State Classic with a time of 13:38.56. Against some of the nation's elite distance runners, Curtin powered his way past his previous school record set in 2013 by 20 seconds.
Curtin’s performance was a huge boost for the Hokies as the squad recently moved from the No. 12 spot to the No. 10 spot in the latest USTFCCCA Rankings.
Curtin currently ranks second nationally in the 5000 and ninth nationally in the 3000. He also ranks first in the ACC in both events. The Leesburg, Virginia, native was named ACC Men’s Indoor Track Performer of the Week earlier this season after posting a time of 7:50.63 in the 3000 meters.
Curtin joins Chris Uhle as a two-time ACC Performer of the Week winner as Uhle claimed ACC Field Performer of the Week honors twice already this season. Manuel Ziegler also earned ACC Field Performer of the Week earlier this season.
Curtin and the Hokies will be back in action as the team hosts the Virginia Tech Challenge at Rector Field House this weekend.
