Curtin crushes school record in 5000
Distance runner bests own previous school record by 20 seconds

AMES, Iowa – Thomas Curtin shattered his own school record in the 5000 on day one of the Iowa State Classic hosted by Iowa State on Friday evening.

Curtin destroyed his own school record set in 2013 by over 20 seconds to win the 5000-meter race. Curtin crossed the finish line at 13:38.56, besting his previous school record of 14:01.65. That time sits at second in the nation prior to this weekend’s times before it has been converted due to being run on a flat track. Curtin also currently ranks second in the nation in the 3000. In addition, Curtin now holds the fastest times in the ACC in both the 3000 and the 5000.

Sarah Rapp, competing in the women’s 5000-meter race, posted a sixth place finish with a time of 16:16.13. Rapp’s time is good enough to sit second in the Virginia Tech Record Book at that distance.

Tech’s distance group will be back in action tomorrow afternoon.

HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Hokies put in quality performances at the Marshall Invitational on Friday evening.

David Prince won the men’s long jump hitting a distance of 23’09” (7.24m), out jumping the nearest competitor by three inches.

Alexandra Watt posted a third-place finish in the women’s 5000 with a time of 18:03.00.

The Hokie sprinters will take the stage tomorrow as will the Tech high jumpers.
