JACKSONVILEE, Fla. – Four more Hokies qualified for nationals, joining eight other Tech athletes, earning the right to compete at the 2014 NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA East Regional held in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday evening.
Shannon Morton set a new school record in the women’s 1500-meter race en route to a sixth-place finish overall. Morton’s time of 4:15.44 beat out former Tech great Tasmin Fanning’s time of 4:17.79 set back in 2007.
Grant Pollock earned his trip to Eugene after placing 10th in the men’s 1500-meter race. Pollock’s time of 3:45.91 was good enough to place him in the top five of his heat and earn an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships.
Both Stephan Munz and Torben Laidig qualified for nationals after hitting a mark of 17’5.5” (5.32m) in the men’s pole vault. Munz finished in seventh place while Laidig finished in ninth.
Twelve total Tech athletes will compete at nationals. All of the Tech runners and field athletes who advanced this week will compete in Eugene, Ore., on June 11-14 in search of a national title.
