GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a record-setting performance at the Florida Relay’s this past weekend, freshman javelin thrower Eva Vivod was named the ACC Women’s Track & Field Performer of the Week as announced by the ACC office on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first collegiate meet of her career, Vivod’s throw of 186’04” (56.80m) set a new Virginia Tech school record surpassing All-American Dee O'Connell’s record set in 2002 and came less than two feet of the ACC record distance of 188’3” (57.38m). Vivod’s mark currently ranks No. 1 in the nation so far this season.
The freshman from Maribor, Slovenia competed against the previous No. 1 in Florida’s Marija Vucenovic at the Florida Relays and passed her mark of 186’1” (56.73m). Vivod is one of three throwers in the nation so far this season to hit a mark higher than 180 feet.
“Eva has worked tremendously hard since arriving at Virginia Tech in September. Her hard work is paying off and this is just the tip of the iceberg for her career as a Hokie,” said associate head track & field coach and throws coach Greg Jack.
Vivod will be back in action with the Virginia Tech track & field team at the 2014 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on April 17-19. Some members of the team will be competing this weekend at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee.
