CLEMSON, S.C. – Tomas Kruzliak secured a third-place finish in the men’s weight throw with a heave of 64’08.00” (19.71m), earning All-ACC honors, on day two of the 2014 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Clemson University while several other Hokies earned qualifying bids to the finals tomorrow in their respective races.
Kruzliak ‘s third-place finish is the second time he has medaled in the event in as many years. This was also the first event of the meet thus far that saw the Hokies medal.
Courtney Dobbs earned a fifth-place finish in the women’s 5000-meter final. Dobbs was consistently in the top-five for the majority of the race posting a final time of 16:21.30, her personal best at the distance.
The women’s 800-meter race saw three Hokies earn bids to the final as the top-three qualifiers. Frances Dowd (2:07.46), Hanna Green (2:08.07) and Amanda Smith (2:08.84) all earned automatic bids by winning their respective heats.
Competing in her first ACC meet, Jasmine Mitchell earned a qualifying bid in the women’s 400-meter final after running a season best time of 55.15.
Grant Pollock was the fifth overall qualifier in the men’s one-mile race and earned a spot in Saturday's final with a time of 4:08.95.
In the men’s 60-meter dash, Tadashi Pinder was the seventh overall qualifier with a time of 6.80 seconds.
Both Tihut Degfae (1:51.62) and Martin Dally (1:52.31) qualified for the final of the men’s 800-meter race after finishing as the third and seventh overall qualifiers, respectively.
At the end of day two, the Virginia Tech men sit in sixth place with 11 points while the women sit in a tie for tenth place with nine points.
The Hokies continue tomorrow with events beginning at 11 a.m. The final awards will be given out at 4 p.m. Live results and live coverage via ESPN3 will be available.
