CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams travel to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the 2014 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Clemson University. The men are coming off a first-place finish at last year’s meet and will look to defend their title while the women will look to improve upon last year’s ninth place finish.
Events will begin on Thursday afternoon at 12 and will conclude on Saturday at 4 p.m. when final awards are given out.
Last year, the men’s team claimed individual conference championships in the 5000-meter race, the distance medley relay, the 800-meter race, the 3000-meter race, the pole vault and the weight throw while the women’s team earned one individual conference championship in the pole vault. Of the team members that won individual conference championships last year, Martin Dally, Tihut Degfae, Stephan Munz, Grant Pollock and Martina Schultze will be competing in the meet.
The Hokies have performed well this season posting several of the top times and marks in the ACC. On the men’s side, Tadashi Pinder posted the sixth fastest time this season in the 60-meter dash. Kevin DeWillie (fifth), Dally (seventh) and Tihut Degfae (ninth) are all ranked in the top-10 in the 800-meter distance. Pollock owns the seventh fastest time in the one-mile distance. Leoule Degfae possesses the sixth best time this season in the 3000-meter distance. The Hokies also own the second fastest time this year in the distance medley relay and the seventh fastest time in the 4x400. Tech’s Torben Laidig (second), Chris Uhle (fourth), Munz (fifth) and Jared Allison (sixth) all rank in the top-10 in the pole vault while Tomas Kruzliak owns the top mark in the weight throw.
On the women’s side, Amanda Smith (second), Frances Dowd (third) and Hanna Green (sixth) rank in the top-10 in the 800-meter distance. In the 5000-meter distance, Courtney Dobbs possesses the 10th fastest time this season. The Hokies’ 4x400-meter relay team owns the eighth fastest time ran this season while the distance medley relay team has the seventh fastest mark of the year. In the pole vault, Schultze has posted the second best mark this season while Kristen Lee possesses the sixth.
The meet will be broadcast on Friday and Saturday live on ESPN3 and live results will be available for all three days of competition.
