BLACKSBURG, Va. - Martina Schultze hit a season-best in the pole vault on the final day of the Virginia Tech Challenge while Amanda Smith set a personal best in the women’s 800-meter race at the Alex Wilson Invitational to conclude the regular indoor track & field season for the Hokies.
The Hokies were able to garner several quality performances at the Virginia Tech Invitational. On the women’s side, Schultze reasserted her dominance in the women’s pole vault hitting a mark of 14’02.50” (4.33m), her highest jump this season, en route to a first-place finish. Teammate Kristen Lee finished in fifth place with a jump of 12’08.75” (3.87m).
In the women’s 800-meter race, Shalonda Mitchell set a personal best of 2:12.57 good for a second-place finish overall.
For the men, the Hokies placed two jumpers in the top-five in the men’s long jump. David Prince jumped out to a mark of 22’06.50” (6.87m) for a fourth place finish while teammate Scott Campbell hit a mark of 22’05.25” (6.84m) for a fifth place finish.
In the men’s pole vault, Torben Laidig led the way for the Hokies with a mark of 17’05.75” (5.33m) good for a second place finish while teammates Chris Uhle, Jared Allison and Stephan Munz hit marks of 17’00.00” (5.18m) for third, fourth and sixth place finishes, respectively.
Competing unattached, Travis Correa and Griffin Carmichael finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, with times of 1:54.48 and 1:54.86.
Running unattached in the men’s 5000-meter race, Andrew Gaiser finished with a time of 15:32.14, good for a fourth place finish.
The Hokies performed equally as well at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The men’s distance-medley relay team consisting of Leoule Degfae, Martin Dally, Tihut Degfae and Grant Pollock finished fifth overall in the meet with a time of 9:30.26, just two-hundredths of a second shy of the school record.
In the men’s 800-meter race, Kevin DeWillie and Martin Dally finished in third and fourth places, respectively. DeWillie finished with a time of 1:50.29 while Dally finished with a time of 1:50.48.
Stuart Robinson finished in second place in the men’s 3000-meter race with a time of 8:20.53.
Amanda Smith ran an outstanding race in the women’s 800-meter race. She set a personal record with a time of 2:05.95 and was less than eight-hundredths of a second off of the Virginia Tech record set by teammate Frances Dowd. Dowd who also competed in the race finished with a time of 2:06.74 for a fifth-place finish. Hanna Green finished in eighth with a time of 2:09.15.
Sarah Rapp, Courtney Dobbs and Abigail Motley put in quality performances and all set personal bests in the women’s 3000-meter race. Rapp finished in second place with a time of 9:24.21. Dobbs crossed the line with a time of 9:29.39 for a third-place finish while Motley finished in fifth place with a time of 9:46.88.
With these two meets, the Hokies conclude their regular season and will move onto the postseason next weekend at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. The meet will begin on Thursday, Feb. 27 and will conclude on Saturday, March 1.
