TOWSON, Md. - Virginia Tech thrower Alexander Ziegler was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s Track & Field/ Cross Country First Team, announced Thursday afternoon. Ziegler had previously been named to the second team a year ago. Indiana’s distance runner Andy Bayer was named the men’s Academic All-American of the Year.
Ziegler, who is working towards a Masters of Business Administration after earning an undergraduate degree in management, finished his career at Tech winning three national championships and four ACC championships. He was the 2013 ACC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a six-time ACC All-Academic team selection.
The Dischingen, Germany native went out on top, winning the final competition of his career when he claimed the weight throw title at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Ziegler’s throw of 73-8.25 (22.46m) stood for the final three rounds and sat nearly four feet beyond thr throw of any other competitor. Prior to the national championship Ziegler set a new ACC Championship meet mark when he claimed the weight throw title with a throw of 77-8.75 (23.69) at the ACC Indoor Championship.
