DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Ronnie Black posted Tech’s best finish at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held over the weekend on the Drake University campus. Black was one of three athletes the Hokies sent to the championships. Sprinter Darrell Wesh and long jumper Jeff Artis-Gray also competed.
Black notched a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 7-4 ½ (2.25m) after handling heights of 7-0 ½ (2.15m) and 7-2 ½ (2.20m) with ease. His finishing mark set a new Tech outdoor record in the event and also puts him in position to be selected for the national team, which will compete at the World Track & Field Championships in Moscow in August. The qualifying jump for the team is 7-5 3/4 (2.28m).
Artis-Gray earned an 11th-place finish for the Hokies in the long jump. In his first attempt Artis-Gray jumped 25.4 (7.72m) and later matched the mark in his third attempt, but was unable to gain any more distance in this fourth try.
Wesh competed for the Hokies in the 100- and 200 meter dashes, but was unable to advance past the first round.
