BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech track & field teams wrapped up competition today at the VT Invitational with six top-five finishes, highlighted by sophomore Martina Schultze’s win in the pole vault.
With Tech’s throwers not competing this weekend, and its distance crew not running today, the focus for the Hokies was the on their pole vaulters, sprinters and jumpers. Schultze opened up the day on a high note for Tech as she won the pole vault with the third-best mark recorded in the coutntry this season at 13-11 (4.26m), topping Tennessee’s Linda Hadfield by a half a foot. On the men’s side, Chris Uhle had the third best mark in the event, and set a new personal record at 16-9.5 (5.12m).
The women’s high jump saw freshman Johnna Dominick finish in a tie for second place at 5-7 (1.70m) with four other competitors. Lacey Shuman of NC State was the only jumper to top the mark.
Tech sprinters had a pair of fourth-place results in the 200m. Sophomore Ciara Simms, running unattached this weekend, clocked a time of 24.57 in her heat, while on the men’s side freshman took second in his heat Tadashi Pinder with a time of 21.91, 0.24 seconds back of East Carolina’s Cameron Hudson top time.
The Hokies' afternoon concluded with the women’s 4x400 relay team finishing fifth at 3:52.06, while the men’s team closed out the day in a close finish for second in the first heat. After the second heat, Tech slipped to third overall by one-hundredth of a second.
