NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Virginia Tech men’s track & field team moved up for the second straight week, this time one spot to No. 16 nationally, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday in its week five outdoor computer rankings.
Tech, the Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor champions, currently has 12 men listed among the NCAA’s top-25 in their respective events. They are: Keith Ricks and Darrell Wesh (100 meters), Michael Hammond and Chris Walizer (1500 meters), Will Mulherin (5000 meters), Hunter Hall, Joe Davis and Mike Miller (pole vault), Hasheem Halim (triple jump), Alexander Ziegler and Denis Mahmic (hammer throw) and Matthias Treff (javelin throw). In addition, the 4x100 meter relay of Jeff Artis-Gray, Wesh, Jonathan McCants and Ricks is among Division I’s top-25.
On Sunday at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational, Hammond broke a 25-year old school record in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:39.22, while Mulherin reset his own record in the 5k (13:41.06).
The Hokies continue to be the top ranked squad in the Southeast Region.
