GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Dave Cianelli has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, which was announced Tuesday by the league office.
Cianelli garnered the honor after the Hokies held off seven-time defending champion Florida State by 4.5 points to win the 2012 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Tech won its first ever ACC outdoor crown in thrilling fashion, clinching the title on the final event of the meet, the 4x400 meter relay. In all, the Hokie men won five gold medals and tallied 14 All-ACC accolades.
This is the seventh ACC Coach of the Year award for Cianelli, who is in his 11th year at Tech. He was also the Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year in 2010 and the Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year last year. In 2007 and 2008, Cianelli garnered both the Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year honors from the conference.
