GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior All-American Will Mulherin (Yorktown, Va.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Track & Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
On Friday night at the Raleigh Relays, Mulherin reset his own school record and won the 5000 meters in a time of 13:49.95, using a well-timed kick to run past Eastern Kentucky’s Soufiane Bouchikhi and Princeton’s Joe Stilin in the final 100 meters. He bettered his own school record of 13:50.76, which he set at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Mulherin’s time is also a “B” (provisional) qualifying time for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June and currently ranks as the top 5k time in Division I.
Mulherin is the third Hokie in as many weeks to garner the weekly honor from the conference this outdoor season as senior Keith Ricks and freshman Ciara Simms have also earned the accolade.
The Hokies will split the squad between two meets this weekend: Mulherin and Tech’s distance runners will travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the Colonial Relays at William & Mary, while the rest of the Hokies will head to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays.
