CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech won six events Saturday as the Hokie men’s and women’s track & field teams wrapped up competition on the second day of the Miami Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium. Tech’s winners included sophomore Scott Campbell (decathlon), freshman Leah Nugent (100 meter hurdles), senior All-American Keith Ricks (100 meters) and freshman Ciara Simms (100 meters), along with the men’s and women’s 4x100 meter relay teams.
Ricks carried over his strong form from the indoor season as he won the 100 meters in a personal best tying 10.33, bettering his nearest competitor in the field by over three tenths of a second. In the women’s 100 meters, the Hokies took the top two spots as Simms was first in 11.68 and senior Ogechi Nwaneri was second in 11.81. Simms’ 100 meter time of 11.68 ranks fifth on Tech’s all-time performance list.
Simms then came back and finished tied for second in the 200 meters (23.96), good for No. 6 in Tech history. Also in the women’s 200 meters, senior Aunye Boone (24.65) was fourth and junior Jameice DeCoster (24.80) was seventh.
Nugent earned a win in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.33 and placed eighth in the 200 meters (25.02).
Campbell had another outstanding day in the decathlon as he set personal bests in each of the five events contested on day two and won the event with a personal best score of 6,261 points. Campbell began the day by finishing second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.65), good for 773 points. He then posted marks of 101-8 (30.98m) in the discus throw and 12-7.25 (3.84m) in the pole vault, which earned him 484 and 573 points, respectively. Campbell concluded the day by winning the javelin throw (136-9, 41.69m) and finishing second in the 1500 meters (4:47.81) to score 467 and 632 points.
Combined with yesterday’s performances, Campbell had PRs in eight of the 10 decathlon events this weekend and he bettered his previous best in the decathlon by 370 points.
Junior Yvonne Amegashie was the top collegiate finisher in the 400 meters as she was third overall in a personal best 54.74. Amegashie’s time puts her No. 4 all-time at Tech in the event. Junior Jeff Artis-Gray was fourth in the 400 meters (48.11) and senior Eric Hoepker was fifth (48.46). Junior Jonathan McCants set a PR in the 200 meters (21.69) and finished ninth, while also running 10th in the 400 meters (49.35).
In the relays, Tech swept the 4x100 meter events as the men’s team of Artis-Gray, Wesh, McCants and Ricks were victorious in 41.59 and the women’s quartet of Simms, DeCoster, Nugent and Nwaneri won in 45.81.
The Hokies return to the Sunshine State next weekend as they will compete in the Central Florida Invitational in Orlando on March 23-24.
