CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Annjulie Vester won the women’s hammer throw in her Virginia Tech debut as the Hokie men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2012 outdoor season with day one of the Miami Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium Friday. In addition, sophomore Scott Campbell set three personal bests on the first day of the 10 event decathlon and stands in second place.
Vester, throwing for the first time as a Hokie, won the hammer throw with a mark 187 feet, 11 inches (57.27m) on her second attempt, which ranks No. 5 on Tech’s all-time performance list.
Campbell is in second with 3,332 points after day one and five events of the decathlon. Campbell started off the day with a time of 11.32 in the 100 meters, which earned him 791 points. He then posted the second best mark in the field in the long jump of 21-1.25 (6.43m), good for 682 points. Campbell followed with outdoor personal bests in the shot put (31-11.25, 9.73m) and high jump (5-8.75, 1.75m), which scored 469 and 585 points, respectively. He finished the day with another PR in the 400 meters as he ran a time of 50.20 and scored 805 points.
Tomorrow, Campbell will compete in the second day of the decathlon which consists of the 110 meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 meters.
Day two of the combined events begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relays and field events also start at 1 p.m. with the women’s shot put, men’s discus throw and men’s long jump.
