NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Virginia Tech men’s track & field team is ranked No. 9 nationally, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced in its week five indoor poll Monday. The Hokies began the season ranked No. 18 and have been ranked in the top-10 in each of the last three weekly polls.
Tech currently has seven men ranked in the top-25 nationally on the NCAA performance list in their respective events. They are: Keith Ricks (60 meters, 7th), Jeff Artis-Gray (60 meter hurdles, t-21st), Ronnie Black (high jump, t-11th), Joe Davis (pole vault, t-17th), Hasheem Halim (triple jump, 5th), Marcel Lomnicky (weight throw, 2nd) and Alexander Ziegler (weight throw, 3rd).
The women have three student-athletes: Ogechi Nwaneri (60 meters, t-17th), Victoria von Eynatten (pole vault, t-3rd) and Martina Schultze (pole vault, t-10th) among the top-25, according to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS).
Currently three Hokies, Lomnicky, Ziegler and von Eynatten, are automatically qualified for the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship on March 9-10 in Nampa, Idaho.
The men remained the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region, while the women are tabbed fourth in the Southeast.
The Hokies will compete in the ACC Indoor Championship this weekend (Feb. 23-25) at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston, Mass. The Tech men are the defending ACC indoor champions.
