BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Kristen Brown (pole vault) and junior All-American Denis Mahmic (weight throw) each earned victories as the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s indoor track & field squads competed on day one of Virginia Tech Challenge at Rector Field House Friday evening.
Brown became the seventh woman in Tech history to clear the four-meter mark indoors in the pole vault as she cleared a personal-best height of 13 feet, one and a half inches (4.00m) to win the unseeded section of the women’s pole vault. In addition, redshirt freshman Lyndsey Saunders placed third with a personal best vault of 12-1.5 (3.70m). It marks the second straight week Brown and Saunders have set a PR in the event.
In the men’s weight throw, Mahmic won the event with a throw of 63-8.75 (19.42m), bettering his nearest competitor in the field by over five feet.
Freshman Demitri Knowles ran a season-best 6.90 in the prelims of the 60 meter dash and sophomore Scott Campbell ran a personal best 8.63 in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles.
Tech returns to action tomorrow for day two of the VT Challenge. Field events start at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump and women’s seeded pole vault. Running events start at 1 p.m. with the women’s 3000 meters.
